Rising floodwaters led to dozens of rescues and the evacuation of an elementary school as forecasters warned of widespread flash flooding through midweek.

Up to 5 inches of rain had fallen in parts of Allegany County, Maryland, as of Tuesday afternoon. Rainfall rates were up to 1 to 2 inches an hour.

At 6:58 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued in east-central Wake, northeastern Johnston, Nash, and eastern Franklin counties. It came a minute after the NWS said a severe thunderstorm was located in Elm City, eight miles south of Nashville, moving northeast at 50 m.p.h.
