The Atherstone Ball Game is a historic event held annually on Shrove Tuesday in Atherstone, Warwickshire, England. This tradition, dating back to 1199, is one of the oldest surviving examples of medieval football in the United Kingdom. ​ Gameplay and Rules The game unfolds along Atherstone's main thoroughfare, Long Street, and lasts for two hours, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. A large, specially made ball is thrown from an elevated position by a local celebrity or notable figure to commence the game.
